A narrow, sharp-edged mountain ridge separating two adjacent glacial valleys or cirques, formed as glacial erosion cuts back into the mountainside from both sides until only a thin, knife-like divide remains between them. Aretes are among the most visually distinctive landforms of a heavily glaciated alpine landscape.
