A mass of glacial ice covering more than fifty thousand square kilometres of land, thick enough to bury the underlying terrain and flow outward from its own interior under its immense weight. Only the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets exist today, together holding the great majority of the world's fresh water in frozen form.
