A thick, floating platform of glacial ice that extends out over the ocean from a coastline where a glacier or ice sheet flows down to the sea, remaining attached to the land ice behind it while floating freely on the water below. Antarctica's ice shelves are the largest on Earth and act as a buttress slowing the flow of the grounded ice sheet behind them.
