A pingo is an intrapermafrost, ice cored hill, ranging from about 3 to 70 meters high and 30 to 1,000 meters across, typically conical in shape. Pingos are a periglacial landform, meaning they grow and persist only in non-glacial but cold environments such as the Arctic and subarctic, wherever permafrost is present. More than 11,000 pingos are estimated to exist on Earth, with the greatest concentration, about 1,350, found on the Tuktoyaktuk peninsula.
