Wadden Sea National Park

Habitat and Species Management Area

Wadden Sea National Park covers the Danish part of the Wadden Sea, stretching from Ho Bugt to the German border and including the islands of Fanø, Mandø and Rømø along with Skallingen, the Varde river valley and much of the surrounding marshland. It was designated a national park on 17 January 2008 and took effect in 2010, and at about 1,466 square kilometers it is by far the largest of the national parks in Denmark outside Greenland. The Wadden Sea is an internationally important resting ground for migratory birds, with more than 10 million passing through twice a year, and the Danish park forms part of a wider trilateral Wadden Sea National Parks system shared with Germany and the Netherlands along the North Sea German Bight. The site became part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014, and it is administered by the Danish Ministry of the Environment.
