Percolation

Hydrological and Oceanic Processes

The slow downward movement of water through the pore spaces of soil and porous rock under gravity, continuing the path begun by infiltration until the water either reaches the water table or is held within the soil's unsaturated zone. Percolation rates depend heavily on the permeability of the material the water passes through.
