Lake Baikal

Also Known As Baikal Informal short form used in English alongside the full name Lake Baikal. · Ozero Baykal The Russian name (Russian: Озеро Байкал), "ozero" meaning lake. The name Baikal itself is thought to derive from a Turkic or Mongolic term for a rich or sacred lake.
Lakes

Lake Baikal is a rift lake in southern Siberia, Russia, the deepest lake on Earth and, by volume, the largest reservoir of unfrozen fresh water on the planet, holding close to a fifth of the world's surface fresh water. Formed in a tectonic rift more than twenty-five million years ago, it is also thought to be the world's oldest lake, and its long isolation has produced an unusually high number of species found nowhere else.
