Lake Balkhash

Lakes

A large lake in southeastern Kazakhstan, notable for having fresh water in its western half and markedly saltier water in its east, divided by a narrow strait. Heavy water diversion for irrigation has raised concern that it could shrink in a manner similar to the Aral Sea.
