A large brackish embayment in northwestern Venezuela, often described as a lake though tidally connected to the Caribbean, at the center of the country's petroleum industry since major oil discoveries in the early twentieth century. Its skies are also known for an unusually frequent and intense lightning phenomenon, the Catatumbo lightning.
