Fold Mountains

Mountain Ranges and Massifs

A mountain range built where compressive tectonic forces buckle layers of sedimentary rock into a series of upward and downward folds, thickening and elevating the crust along the belt. The Alps, the Himalayas and the Rockies are all fold mountain ranges, formed where converging tectonic plates crumpled thick sequences of rock deposited on their margins.
