An ice field is a mass of interconnected valley glaciers spread across a mountain mass, with rock ridges or summits protruding through the ice. Ice fields typically form in colder climates and higher altitudes where precipitation is sufficient to sustain them, and the higher peaks of underlying mountain rock that push up through an ice field are called nunataks. Ice fields are larger than individual alpine glaciers but smaller than ice caps or ice sheets, and unlike an ice cap, whose own form can override the terrain beneath it, an ice field's shape is determined by the landforms around it.
