A geyser is a natural spring that periodically erupts, ejecting a turbulent column of water and steam into the air. The eruptions occur because of particular hydrogeological conditions, most importantly underground heat and a plumbing system that allows pressure to build before each release. Geysers are rare worldwide, forming only in a handful of locations where these conditions align.
