The steep incline of the seafloor connecting the outer edge of a continental shelf to the much deeper ocean basin beyond it, marking the true geological boundary between continental and oceanic crust. The continental slope is commonly cut by submarine canyons where sediment-laden currents have carved channels down its face over geological time.
