King George Island is the largest of the South Shetland Islands, lying 120 kilometres off the coast of Antarctica in the Southern Ocean. The island was named after King George III of the United Kingdom. It is known under several other names in different languages, among them Isla 25 de Mayo in Argentine Spanish, Ilha do Rei George in Brazilian Portuguese and Isla Rey Jorge in Chilean Spanish, and its Russian name is Vaterloo. It covers about 1,150 square kilometres.
