A promontory is a raised mass of land that projects into a lowland or a body of water. Most promontories form either from a hard ridge of rock that has resisted erosion that wore away the softer rock around it, or from high ground left standing between two river valleys where they meet. A headland, or head, is one type of promontory. This description is adapted from Wikipedia contributors under CC BY-SA 4.0; changes were made. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/

Most promontories either are formed from a hard ridge of rock that has resisted the erosive forces that have removed the softer rock to the sides of it, or are the high ground that remains between two river valleys where they form a confluence.
