A ridge of sand deposited by waves and currents, typically running parallel to the shore and sometimes exposed above the water at low tide, formed where the energy of breaking waves drops the sediment they carry once it reaches a particular depth. Sandbars can shift position substantially with each storm and are a significant hazard to navigation in shallow coastal waters.
