A narrow, finger-like extension of sand or shingle projecting out from the coastline into open water, built by longshore drift carrying sediment along the shore until it is deposited beyond the point where the coastline changes direction. A spit's free end often curves inward under the continued influence of waves and currents, and a spit that eventually connects two points of land becomes a bar.
