A coastal wetland regularly flooded by tidal salt water and vegetated by salt-tolerant grasses and low shrubs, typically developing in the sheltered, low-energy environment behind a barrier island, spit or estuary mouth where fine sediment can settle undisturbed. Salt marshes buffer the coastline against storm surge and serve as an especially productive nursery habitat for fish and shellfish.
