A natural arch of rock spanning open water at a coastline, formed where wave erosion has worked through a headland from both sides, most often by the enlargement and eventual breakthrough of a sea cave. When the arch's roof eventually collapses, it leaves an isolated pillar of rock standing offshore, called a sea stack.
