Luzon

Marine and Coastal Landforms

Luzon is the largest and most populous island of the Philippines and lies in the northern part of the Philippine archipelago. It is the economic and political centre of the country: the capital, Manila, and the most populous city, Quezon City, are both on the island. With about 64.3 million people as of 2024, Luzon holds more than half of the national population, is the fourth most populous island in the world and ranks fifteenth in the world by land area. The name Luzon is also used for one of the three main island groups of the Philippines. In that wider sense it includes the Luzon mainland, the Batanes and Babuyan groups to the north, the Polillo Islands to the east, and outlying islands such as Catanduanes, Marinduque and Mindoro to the south, with Masbate, Palawan and Romblon also counted although they are sometimes grouped with the Visayas.
