Mountain Belt

Mountain Ranges and Massifs

A long, continuous zone of mountainous terrain built by sustained tectonic compression along a plate boundary, typically comprising several individual ranges that share a common structural history, such as folding, faulting and metamorphism driven by the same collision. The Alpine-Himalayan belt, spanning from southern Europe to Southeast Asia, is the world's longest continuous example.
