Speightstown is a town in Saint Peter parish, Barbados, about 12 miles north of the capital Bridgetown, formally settled around 1630 and named for William Speight, a member of the island's first Assembly who owned the land. It served as Barbados's principal port in early colonial times, shipping sugar to London and Bristol and earning the nickname Little Bristol, and had a population of 3,634 at the 2013 census as the island's second largest town. It is now a tourism and shopping hub, and has hosted the Speightstown Community Archaeology Project since 2010 with the University of Winchester and the University of the West Indies.
