County of Brant

The County of Brant is a single-tier municipality in the Canadian province of Ontario that, despite keeping county in its name, functions as a standalone city government with no upper-tier authority. It sits in southern Ontario and completely encloses the separately governed city of Brantford, with a 2021 population of 39,474 across 817.66 square kilometers. Joseph Brant and Mohawk followers settled the area in 1788 after the American Revolution, and the county was formally established in 1851 from parts of Wentworth and Oxford counties. On January 1, 1999, the town of Paris and the townships of Brantford, Burford, Oakland, Onondaga and South Dumfries amalgamated into the single municipality that carries the legal name County of Brant today.
