St. Catharines

North America

St. Catharines is a city in southern Ontario, Canada, about 51 kilometers south of Toronto across Lake Ontario and 19 kilometers from the United States border along the Niagara River, with 136,803 residents in the city proper and 433,604 in its metropolitan area at the 2021 census, the most populous city in the Niagara Region. Settled by Loyalists in the 1780s after the American Revolution, it grew into a major commercial hub following construction of the Welland Canal between 1824 and 1833 and served as a terminus of the Underground Railroad, where the abolitionist Harriet Tubman lived; nicknamed the Garden City for its parks, it is home to Brock University and hosts the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta on Martindale Pond.
