Ciudad Quesada, commonly known simply as San Carlos, is the capital of the canton of San Carlos in Alajuela province, in the northern lowlands of Costa Rica near Arenal Volcano and Lake Arenal. It is the commercial center for one of Costa Rica's principal cattle-ranching and dairy regions and a gateway to the Arenal tourist corridor. The canton of San Carlos is Costa Rica's largest by area, and the city serves as its administrative seat.
