Lajas is a municipality and town in Cienfuegos Province, Cuba, about 35 kilometers west of Santa Clara. Settlement began around 1800 and the town was formally founded on August 29, 1824, when a Canary Islander named it Santa Isabel de las Lajas after his wife, Isabel Castellon; it became an official town in 1854 and a municipality in 1879 under the former Santa Clara Province, and Cuban officials shortened its name to Lajas in 1986. The municipality had 21,187 residents as of 2022 across about 430 square kilometers.
