Qaanaaq

Qaanaaq, formerly known as New Thule, is the main town of the northern part of Avannaata municipality in northwestern Greenland, with a population of 591 as of 2025. Its inhabitants were forcibly relocated there from their traditional home after it was expropriated in 1953 for construction of a United States Air Force base, now Pituffik Space Base. Residents speak the local Inuktun language, and many also speak Kalaallisut and Danish. Qaanaaq is one of the northernmost towns in the world and, within Greenland, the northernmost major town, ranking behind only the smaller public settlements of Qeqertat and Siorapaluk.
