El Progreso is a city in Yoro department in northern Honduras, in the fertile Sula Valley a short distance from San Pedro Sula. It grew rapidly in the early twentieth century as a company town tied to the banana industry, when American fruit companies developed plantations and rail lines through the valley, and it remains a center of agricultural processing and light industry. The city sits on the Ulua River and is one of the more populous cities in the Sula Valley besides San Pedro Sula itself.
