Fort-de-France is the capital and prefecture of Martinique, a Caribbean overseas department and region of France, and its principal administrative, economic and cultural center. It was founded as a fort in 1639 and formally settled in 1669, passing through several names, including Fort-Royal, before taking its present name in 1807, and it became Martinique's leading city after the 1902 eruption of Mount Pelee destroyed the rival city of Saint-Pierre. It remains home to the Port of Fort-de-France, one of the largest ports in the Lesser Antilles, and recorded 75,506 residents at the 2023 census.
