Oaxaca de Juarez, commonly known simply as Oaxaca, is the capital and largest city of the Mexican state of Oaxaca. It is the municipal seat of the surrounding municipality of Oaxaca, the state's most populous municipality, and lies in the Centro District of the Central Valleys region, in the foothills of the Sierra Madre at the base of the Cerro del Fortin, extending to the banks of the Atoyac River.
