New England is the northeasternmost region of the United States, comprising Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut. Settled by English Puritans and Pilgrims in the seventeenth century, it takes its name from that original colonization and retains a distinct cultural identity built on town-meeting government, a rocky Atlantic coastline, and an early role in American industrialization and higher education. The region's borders are cultural and historical rather than physiographic, following the six states' own boundaries.
