Jinotega is the capital of Jinotega department in the northern highlands of Nicaragua, set in a mountain valley known locally as the city of mists for the cloud cover common there. The surrounding highlands are among Nicaragua's most productive coffee-growing zones, and the nearby Apanas reservoir supplies hydroelectric power to the region. Jinotega's economy centers on coffee processing and trade with the more remote municipalities further north.
