The Corn Belt is a region of the Midwestern United States and part of the Southern United States that has dominated national corn production since the 1850s, covering states including Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Nebraska, Kansas, Minnesota, and Missouri. Its level land and deep, fertile, nitrogen rich soils make it well suited to the crop, and as of 2008 its core states of Iowa, Illinois, Nebraska, and Minnesota alone produced more than half of all corn grown in the United States.
