The Great Plains are the vast expanse of flat to gently rolling grassland and prairie stretching across the interior of North America, from the Canadian Prairie provinces through the central United States to Texas. Historically the range of vast bison herds and the homeland of numerous Plains Indian nations, the region was transformed by nineteenth-century settlement into one of the world's most productive agricultural zones for wheat, corn and cattle.
