Officially the Municipality of Anchorage, the most populous city in the U.S. state of Alaska, home to nearly 40 percent of the state's population with 291,247 residents at the 2020 census. Its metropolitan area, which takes in the neighboring Matanuska-Susitna Borough, reached 398,328 residents in 2020, and at 1,706 square miles of land area the city is the fourth-largest by area in the United States.
