Brownsville, Texas

Brownsville is a city in Cameron County in southern Texas, on the Gulf Coast directly across the border from Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico. Founded in 1848 by the entrepreneur Charles Stillman and named for Fort Brown, itself named after an army officer killed in the Mexican-American War, the city was the site of that war's first engagements and of several Civil War battles. With a 2020 population of 186,738, over ninety percent of it Hispanic, Brownsville today serves as a hub for trade with Mexico and, more recently, as home to SpaceX's Starbase private spaceflight facility.
