Charleston is the capital and most populous city of the U.S. state of West Virginia and the county seat of Kanawha County, at the confluence of the Elk and Kanawha rivers. It grew through nineteenth century salt production and later expanded through coal mining and the first natural gas well discovery, becoming West Virginia's permanent state capital in 1885 after the state's separation from Virginia.
