Charlotte Amalie, on the southern shore of the island of Saint Thomas, is the capital and largest town of the United States Virgin Islands, an unincorporated United States territory. Founded in 1666 as Taphus, Danish for beer house, it was renamed in 1691 to honor Charlotte Amalie of Hesse-Kassel, queen consort of Denmark and Norway, and its harbor, once a haven for pirates including Blackbeard, is today one of the busiest Caribbean ports of call for cruise ships, drawing about 1.5 million passengers a year. It is the only United States capital city where traffic drives on the left, and its 2020 census population was 8,194.
