Douglas, Arizona

Douglas is a city in Cochise County in southeastern Arizona, on the United States border directly across from Agua Prieta, Sonora, Mexico. It was founded as a smelter town to process copper ore mined at nearby Bisbee, incorporated in 1905, and named for mining pioneer James Douglas; the Phelps Dodge Corporation's smelting works dominated the local economy until they closed in 1987. With a 2020 population of 16,534, the city remains a port of entry on the Mexican border, now separated from Agua Prieta by a border wall built during the George W. Bush administration.
