Irvine is a planned city in central Orange County, California, in the Los Angeles metropolitan area, with a population of 318,629 as of June 2025, making it the second most populous city in Orange County. Named in 1888 for landowner James Irvine, the area was developed by the Irvine Company beginning in the 1960s and the city was formally incorporated on December 28, 1971. Irvine is home to the University of California, Irvine and to major technology and semiconductor company offices.
