Lincoln is the capital of Nebraska and the county seat of Lancaster County, and ranks as the state's second largest municipality. It was established as Nebraska's state capital in 1869, when the seat of government moved from Omaha, and the University of Nebraska was founded there the same year, becoming a major economic and cultural institution. The city was originally settled in 1856 as Lancaster and renamed for Abraham Lincoln in 1869.
