Mojave is an unincorporated community in Kern County, California, United States, about 50 miles southeast of Bakersfield and 100 miles north of Los Angeles, at an elevation of 842 metres. It lies in the western Mojave Desert below Oak Creek Pass and the Tehachapi Mountains, on the Pacific Crest Trail. The population was 4,700 at the 2020 census, up from 4,238 in 2010. The town began in 1876 as a construction camp on the Southern Pacific Railroad, was the western terminus of the Death Valley borax mule teams from 1884 to 1889, and later served as headquarters for building the Los Angeles Aqueduct. Today the Mojave Air and Space Port hosts flight testing and space industry development.
