Sausalito is a city in Marin County, California, in the United States. Its name is Spanish for small willow grove. It lies about 4 miles north of San Francisco as measured from the Golden Gate Bridge, and about 8 miles south-southeast of San Rafael. Its population was 7,269 at the 2020 census. Before the bridge was built, Sausalito served as a terminus for rail, car and ferry traffic. It grew rapidly as a shipbuilding center during World War II, and in the postwar years became known as a wealthy and artistic enclave, a picturesque residential community with many houseboats, and a tourist destination bounded by protected shoreline and bay.
