Sonoma is a city in Sonoma County, California, in the North Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area, with a 2020 census population of 10,739 in the city proper and 31,479 across the broader Sonoma urban area. Its origins trace to the 1823 founding of Mission San Francisco Solano, and after Mexican secularization of the missions Mariano G. Vallejo founded the civilian town in 1835. The city was the site of the 1846 Bear Flag Revolt, which launched the short lived California Republic before American conquest of the region. Today Sonoma is one of the principal cities of California's Wine Country and the center of the Sonoma Valley American Viticultural Area, known for its wineries and historic downtown plaza.
