Williamsburg is an independent city in the U.S. state of Virginia, with a population of 15,425 at the 2020 census. It stands on the Virginia Peninsula in the northern part of the Hampton Roads metropolitan area, bordered by James City County to the west and south and York County to the east. English settlers founded Middle Plantation in 1632 as a fortified settlement on high ground between the James and York rivers, further inland than their headquarters at Jamestown, and the city of Williamsburg was established on that site in 1699. It served as capital of the Colony and Commonwealth of Virginia from 1699 to 1780 and was a centre of the political events that led to the American Revolution. The College of William and Mary, founded there in 1693, is the second-oldest institution of higher education in the United States. Today the economy rests on tourism around Colonial Williamsburg, the restored Historic Area, which with Jamestown and Yorktown forms the Historic Triangle.
