Col

Peaks and Summits

A col, in geomorphology, is the lowest point on a mountain ridge between two peaks, also called a gap or a pass. A particularly rugged or forbidding col is usually called a notch, and cols are generally unsuitable as mountain passes, though they are occasionally crossed by mule tracks or climbers' routes. The term comes from the French col, from the Latin collum, meaning neck, and tends to be associated more with mountain ranges than hill ranges; many double summits are separated by a prominent col.
