A broad, gently rolling upland lying between a mountain range and a lower coastal plain, formed from the eroded and exposed roots of an older mountain belt rather than from the accumulation of fresh sediment. The Piedmont of the eastern United States, between the Appalachian Mountains and the Atlantic Coastal Plain, is the landform's namesake example.
