Hügelland is a German term for a landscape of low rolling hills whose relief lies between that of a lowland of plains or river terraces and that of a more rugged hill range or low mountain range. It has no exact English equivalent and is usually translated as hill country, hilly terrain, upland or rolling countryside. The word derives from Hügel, meaning a low hill or hillock, and often appears as a proper name for such terrain. It is not sharply defined even in German: on the plains of North Germany, Poland or Hungary it can describe relief of only about 50 metres, in the Alpine Foreland or the Voralpen a height difference of at least 100 to 200 metres, and some scholars define it instead as terrain between 200 and 500 metres above sea level.
