Kinabalu Park, in the Malaysian state of Sabah on Borneo, protects Mount Kinabalu, at 4,095.2 meters the highest peak on the island, and became Malaysia's first UNESCO World Heritage Site when it was inscribed in December 2000. UNESCO recognized it as a center of plant diversity for Southeast Asia, and the park is documented to hold more than 4,500 species of flora and fauna, including at least half of all plant species known from Borneo, 326 bird species, around 100 mammal species and over 110 species of land snail, spanning four climate zones from lowland dipterocarp forest to alpine meadow. It is particularly noted for its carnivorous pitcher plants, including Nepenthes rajah, and for the endemic Kinabalu giant red leech, and Mount Kinabalu itself is among the youngest non-volcanic mountains on Earth, having formed within roughly the last 10 to 35 million years and continuing to rise about 5 millimeters a year.
