Bontebok National Park lies about six kilometers south of Swellendam in South Africa's Western Cape and was established in 1931 to preserve the bontebok, an antelope endemic to the Cape region that had been reduced nearly to extinction. It is the smallest of South Africa's national parks at about 28 square kilometers and sits within the Cape Floristic Region, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Beyond its flagship bontebok population, the park protects endangered fynbos and coastal renosterveld vegetation, with close to 500 recorded grass and plant species and more than 200 bird species, along with leopards, otters, and smaller antelope.
